Removal of Ganglion Cyst in Foot
A cyst that forms on top of a joint, ligament or tendon is known as a ganglion cyst. These are non-cancerous, fluid-filled cysts that may disappear over time. When the cyst is not painful, the typical recommendation is to keep it under observation and report any unusual changes. If it is necessary to remove it, a ganglion resection procedure is recommended.
Ganglion cysts are usually caused by the wear and tear on a tendon or joint. Arthritis may be involved in the formation of a mucinous cyst, which can form on the top of a toe at the last toe joint behind the toenail. The ganglion cyst can become painful if it is big enough to be irritated by shoe pressure or if it is pressing on a nerve. If the joint or tendon on which the ganglion cyst has formed is inflamed, the cyst may cause foot pain.
Treatment of a ganglion cyst is performed in the doctor’s office. Your doctor may aspirate the fluid from the cyst with a syringe and needle. A small amount of cortisone may be injected into the mass to reduce swelling. Recurrence of the cyst is not unusual and may happen within six months or less after aspiration.
Surgical Excision of the Ganglion Cyst
When surgery is recommended, the cyst is removed, along with a small amount of the surrounding tissue. A biopsy is performed to verify the diagnosis. Surgery is performed on an outpatient basis using either local anesthesia or intravenous sedation administered by an anesthetist.
After the surgery, you should be able to walk using a post-operative shoe. You should rest as much as possible, and keep your foot elevated as often as possible for two weeks post-surgery. At that time, the sutures will be removed. You may be able to begin wearing your regular footwear again if it does not cause discomfort. Expect a full recovery to take from two to four months. Your doctor will advise you of ongoing home care after your surgery.
